"TRIBUTE TO THE WAYFARERS"
PROJECT

The Wayfarers is a group of well-respected Buddhist singers and musicians from Malaysia who express their inspiration in the Dhamma through songs. The group had its beginning in 1981 from a choir that Victor formed at the Brickfields Buddhist Maha Vihara and was regarded as one of the most popular Buddhist musical groups in the 80s.

Happy Studio Malaysia would like to invite you to support this project to produce a tribute album to the Wayfarers, in recognition of how the music had inspired and led many people to Dhamma.

With the targeted fund to be raised, twelve specially selected songs from the Wayfarers albums will be re-produced and released as a tribute album. Together with the album, video interviews, memorial publications and sharing sessions will be conducted through this project to document various efforts that the Wayfarers have put in to propagate Dhamma through their music, and the inspirations they had in writing these meaningful songs. We hope that these efforts will contribute valuable information about the history of Buddhist Music in Malaysia.

ABOUT "TRIBUTE TO THE WAYFARERS"

The Wayfarers is a group of well-respected Buddhist singers and musicians who express their inspiration in the Dhamma through songs. They think of themselves as “travelers” with the noble intentions to bring about inspiration and spiritual uplift with their sweet singing voices.

Their songs were composed by their leader, Victor Wee, Tan Huat Chye as well as other song writers.

The group had its beginning in 1981 from a choir that Victor formed at the Brickfields Buddhist Maha Vihara. Together with some friends from Seck Kia Eenh Temple in Malacca, they formed Wayfarers.

The Wayfarers was strongly supported by the late Venerable Dr. K. Sri Dhammananda, the Chief Priest for Malaysia and Singapore.

The first home recording of Buddhist hymns undertaken by Victor and his group of singers on cassette tapes for sale to members at the Brickfields Maha Vihara. After selling a few hundred copies of the cassettes, Victor formed the Wayfarers to get their songs recorded properly at a studio.

They released their first album “Moments of Inspiration” in 1982, and their second album, “The Sunrise Comes” the following year. The two albums adopted the folk style music arrangement, using guitar, flute and keyboard.

The group released five albums in total and their songs had inspired many people and contributed significantly to the Buddhist music scene in the 80-90s.

Being one of the Buddhists that was inspired by the Wayfarers’ songs, Ng Kang Kee, the director of Happy Studio Malaysia, initiated an idea to produce a tribute album to the Wayfarers, in recognition of how the music had inspired and led many people to Dhamma. This idea is strongly supported by Victor and the rest of the Wayfarers’ members.

With the targeted fund to be raised, twelve specially selected songs from the Wayfarers albums will be re-produced.

The original folk and choral styles of the music will be enhanced and re-arranged with new instrumentations, re-harmonization techniques, and modern audio recording and production technologies. Buddhist youths from the region will also be gathered to perform and record the songs in professional studio.

By the release of this album, the production team hopes that the album will ignite and reignite the inspiration of Dhamma in people, especially those who had heard the songs many years ago.

At the same time, we hope that the music from the Wayfarers, and their heart-felt stories in propagating Dhamma through music, will inspire the younger generation and re-energize the Buddhist community.

2.    Why did Happy Studio initiate “Tribute to the Wayfarers” project?

Wayfarers is a group of talented musicians who use their talent to produce many good songs to inspire and lead people to Dhamma. The group is one of the pioneers who had started the trend of using self-composed songs to attract youth to Dhamma. The styles of music they produced, and the methods they used to spread Dhamma through music, are still commonly adopted by younger generations after decades. In fact, the director of Happy Studio, Ng Kang Kee, who had produced many well-accepted Buddhist Hymns albums himself, was inspired by Wayfarers songs when he was in secondary school. The project is initiated by Kang Kee, and supported by Dato Sri.Dr. Victor Wee and some of the key members of the Wayfarers, in recognition of how Wayfarers' music have inspired and led many people to Dhamma.
